After the Security Council met today to discuss the situation in Lybia, these are the informal comments to the media by B. Lynn Pascoe, Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs.

Ok, so what the UN - and its Member States - are going to do? I think I missed this point in Mr Pascoe’s Speech.
(Minute 04:16)
“What do you think of Gheddafi’s Speech today?”
B. Lynn Pascoe sighs and then smirks, clearly embarassed by the question. In that precise moment I felt so disappointed and unhopeful. I am deeply ashamed of the mitigated words of those who should be at the forefront, instead. What are you afraid of, Mr. Pascoe. How many Rwandas are yet to come?
Then he answered, and he voiced just a mild restricted judgement, basically he said that inciting a civil war is “dangerous” and “bad”. He hid behind a neutral personalized expression “I am concerned” and “huge concern” “we are so concerned”. You are concerned when your son doesn’t study, not when such slaughters are happening with total impunity.
Then I remembered what my professor used to say: “You should not blame the UN, you should blame the States they are made of”. Yeah, maybe I just wished the UN officials were, for once, better than those governing them.
